Inspired by an international initiative by the New York Road Runners Foundation, Mighty Metres is a physical education program for primary school children. Launched in May 2007 in the Western Cape the programme is designed to challenge children of all fitness levels to run and walk one kilometre three to five times a week.
Programmes range from a beginners programme called Mighty Metres that aims to encourage children to get active and play.
Mighty Metres is a dynamic running programme aimed at encouraging children to keep active. Since its launch in May 2007, the Mighty Metres programme has attracted about 24,000 children in primary schools in the Western and Eastern Cape.
The programme is designed to challenge children of all fitness levels to run one kilometre 3 – 5 times per week. Primary school children (ages 5 -13) are taught to set goals.
Learners are then rewarded for reaching quarterly and annual goals. Setting and achieving goals become anchors for children who often don’t have role models. These anchors encourages kids to achieve beyond their current reality and achieve success.
Kids are assisted by the Mighty Metres Community Coordinators who convey value messages on self-esteem, respect and goal setting. By repeating the messages we reinforce life changing values and instil a hunger and a quest for education.
