Providing skilled coaches and basic infrastructure for young runners, the JAG Foundation launched the ProNutro JAGRunners programme in June 2008. The programme aims to motivate and train children ranging from primary through to high school to participate in running events such as cross country running, fun runs and track events. Initially spearheaded by acclaimed coach, the late Dave Spence, the programme has been activated in 29 different communities in the Western Cape, Free State, Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal.
A key objective of the programme is to train up coaches from the communities so that they can impart their skills to others and thereby increase training capacity in communities.
Currently 31 qualified coaches are coaching under the mentorship of Marshall Moiloa. The intensive fitness and training programme aims to motivate and train children ranging from primary through to high school to participate in running events such as Cross Country running, fun runs and track events. There are currently 1000 children on the programme.
The secret to the success of the JAGRunners programme lies with the coaches.
At JAG we believe that “If you build a stadium you leave behind a place where children CAN run, but if you “build” a coach, children will leave behind footprints where they HAVE ran.
There is a large shortage of coaches specialising in coaching the youth. My Coaching Backpack programme is in essence – mobile ProNutro JAGRunners package that easy to use with all the coaching guidelines.
My Coaching Backpack consists of a Youth Coaching book, a DVD, Coaching cards, Sports injury manual, Administration manual, life skills manual and basic coaching equipment. This will provide the information and resources to the coaches mentoring the programme.
